Over 2.1 million live IPTV subscribers being served by Alcatel-Lucent platform

There were an estimated 16.1 million IPTV subscribers worldwide at the end of 1Q08. More than half (estimated 8.4 million) were in EMEA, mainly the Western Europe. Asia Pacific has 5.6 million or 35% of the worldwide IPTV subscriber base. North America is lagging behind a little. However AT&T and Verizon (with its hybrid TV offering) in the US are likely to change that over the next two years.

Of the 16.1 million IPTV subscribers, over 2.1 million are being served by Alcatel-Lucent’s middleware platform. That top slot may not be assured for long. Microsoft – at second place right now – has proven to be a strong contender. In fact Microsoft seemed to be ahead of Alcatel-Lucent up until 3Q07 when some of the service providers using a joint AlcaLu-Microsoft solution decided to switch over to Alcatel-Lucent solution.

In 1Q08, IPTV STBs generated over $186 million in revenues. Motorola shipped the most IP STBs during 1Q08.
