« Broadsoft to announce Web 2.0 APIs | Main | Interview with Andrew Harries, CEO, Zeugma Systems »

Thoughts on NXTcomm

Attendance was low for sure. A lot of people walking along the central isle …. But exhibitors along the ends of the hall saw very little traffic.

Lots of Analysts and Press. Announcements were not so exciting though.

Exhibiting companies: mostly infrastructure guys. No startups, no emerging companies ….. and no debates around Telco 2.0 on the floor.

The overall theme appeared to be access again. Not much talk about apps. Some video and IPTV stuff was being talked about. Wimax and LTE ... not much around that topic either.

Most popular giveaway/goodie: Juniper canvas bags (unfortunately I did not have time to do a Goodie Round towards the end). An unusually higher number of free drinks at the show!!!! Including beer!!!

No disco parties, the type you used to find at VON.

Conclusion: For me personally, I was busy all through the event. For exhibitors and attendees in general, we need smaller and focussed shows in order to stay interested in face-to-face meetings. Maybe it is time to re-start iLocus events :)

Jim Dalton:

The demise of VON has left a void for folks who are focused on VoIP. It is not clear where the VON audience will migrate to. IT Expo is a good show, but not a good fit for the central core of VON attendees. VoiceCon could be the choice, but its focused is limited to enterprises. Maybe an iLocus event that could attract an international audience would attract the VON audience.
