I would like to point out that Shaw is not classified as a VOIP. They use similar technology yet Shaw's digital phone service doesn't touch the internet and isn't limited to the bandwidth available.
the official classification is voice over managed packet system.

ShawGuy:
There is a misconception among the users that VoIP is just voice over public internet. that is not quite accurate. it can (and usually does) include voice over managed ip network. indeed majority of voip deployments in the world in the core of service providers' networks in managed voip.

You cable guys! :-)
Its still internet PROTOCOL (the IP). VoIP is a catch all term for specific implementations. But point taken, MSOs have taken a very different approach given the access network that they own and control. The marketing of it as digital (ho hum term in the world of HD) likely helped vis a vis Vonage and AT&T CallVantage VoIP services. The fact that you can use all wall jacks and have battery back up is huge. I want my emergency service to work too!
BTW, I am a Comcast Digital phone (VOIP) user.
